Melide is the pulpo capital of the Camino. Although octopus has been on menus since O Cebreiro, it reaches its apotheosis here. The town's Thursday market meant that fresh seafood was shipped inland regularly, and the tradition stuck. Pulpo á feira — octopus boiled, sliced, dusted with paprika and coarse salt, drizzled with olive oil, and served on a wooden plate — is the dish. The Pulpería Ezequiel is the most famous purveyor, but several other pulperías compete vigorously.

Beyond the octopus, Melide is where the Camino Primitivo (the original route from Oviedo) joins the Francés. The town has a medieval core stretched along the road, shaped by centuries of pilgrim traffic. The Iglesia de San Pedro has Romanesque elements. The Iglesia de San Roque houses a small museum.

Multiple albergues and hotels, bars and restaurants, supermarket and pharmacy. The traffic through town can be dangerous, particularly on market days — follow the arrows carefully.

History

Melide is an ancient settlement at a natural crossroads. Despite its strategic importance since Neolithic times, it was never walled — an unusual vulnerability for a town of this significance. In medieval times, nearly all industry was tied to the Camino.

The Road

The camino leaves Melide through the town center — watch for arrows, which can be hard to spot in the market-day crowds. Follow the main road to the first roundabout and continue straight. The terrain ahead is rolling, with forest and farmland alternating.

We found an amazing Pension in Melide. The facilities are beyond my expectations. We walked in with sore achy swollen feet and immediately were taken care of. The entire place is modern, spotless, and most importantly, the beds are super comfy. Our bedding included fluffy comforter and crisp sheets. The bath includes bath gel, shampoo and conditioner. The lounge area is a zen retreat. Our breakfast choices included freshly scrambled eggs and crisp bacon, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, choice of teas, fresh orange juice, local ham and cheeses and more. I felt as if I was at a restaurant. There are laundry facilities on site including dryer. Rooms are large enough to relax without feeling cramped. The owner went out of her way to make us feel at home. She drove us to the medical clinic and back! Later she brought us a basin with Epsom salts to soothe our feet. In the evening she again drove us to a restaurant . She said we needed to rest our feet to continue our journey tomorrow. This place was so perfect we stayed an extra day resting watching Netflix. I don't why this Pension is not booked solid every day. Do your self a favor and stay here!

Wow! What a treat. Walk through the crowded downtown area and there is a beautiful place with a sparkling pool in the country. It’s just a short distance off the Camino, maybe 200m.

Right in the centre is a new pension with only 4 rooms. It’s beautiful, clean en very quiet. Costs about 56 euros. Would recommend it!

A Casa do Lado is a short walk off the Camino. You can enter through a gate at the back which is on the Camino. It’s a house next to the owners house and has four or five rooms. I was the only one there so I had the whole place to myself. Great kitchen and the owner sticks it with lots of snacks and fruit…so generous! Great place for a group of pilgrims to coordinate and stay. Well worth the price and it’s so quiet!

Alborada (right on the Camino) has amazing icecream. Small selection of flavours but veeeery good. Try the pistachio!
