The ruins of the Convento de San Antón are one of the meseta's finest surprises. The remains of the monastery arch over the camino itself, and you walk through what was once a grand pilgrim hospital. The Antonine monks who ran the order specialized in treating ergotism — a disease caused by contaminated grain that was common in medieval Europe. They wore a distinctive Tau cross, which you'll see carved into the stonework.

The ruins are atmospheric and photogenic. A small albergue has been established in the remaining structures, offering a donativo bed in a genuinely historic setting. Even if you're not staying, pause here — the combination of the arch, the ruined walls, and the open meseta beyond makes this one of the most memorable spots on the Francés.

Host was very kind, let us use his shower, cold water shower only and needed to save water.

The ruins are absolutely incredible to witness. The host guided us to behind the ruins where we were able to camp in a field because harvest has already been

The place has no electricity, only cold water and you are asked to save water, but I loved it. The hospitalieras were really nice, the food good and I got a lot of rest.

Can anyone confirm if the Albergue in San Anton is open today or tomorrow (June 1 or June 2)? Gracias ♡

I was well and truly open on 23 May 2025 and the experience of super cold shower, no electricity, plentiful wine and paella and wonderful warm blanket in the small dorm . Angela is an angel. Best donativo so far for me.

Today on May 9, 2025 I was waiting for the albergue to open, from 13:40 to 14:40, but unfortunately nobody came. An old local man said the albergue may not work because of the weather, since it was raining. Nobody answered an email with a question if the albergue would be open or not. Feel disappointed since I deliberately woke up earlier in Burgos to reach this particular place.

I am staying here (18.09.2024)-it’s open, magical (and no one is wearing helmets!) (reference to an earlier comment)

Stay here if you get the chance. Joseph the volunteer on site was so accommodating and even let us in early due to the heat. The pilgrim meal was lovely. Check in is at 2.30 pm so be aware if you arrive too early. Take coins for the vending machine to get any drinks. No power or hot water was available
