As far as the eye can tell, the camino is about the only thing keeping El Burgo Ranero on the map. The wheat and wool trade that once sustained it has been displaced by mechanization, and the town has a worn but dignified quality common to meseta settlements.

The church lost its artistic treasures to a fire, though the building itself survives. The real attraction, if you're here in late May, is the stork nests on the tower — you may catch a glimpse of chicks waiting for lunch.

A few bars and albergues provide services. The town is a practical stopping point rather than a destination.

Notice

In late May, check the stork nests on the church tower — the chicks are a highlight of the season.

History

The town owes its existence to wheat and wool. The name may derive from the granaries (burgos) that stored the grain, or from the Latin for 'frog' (rana), depending on which historian you ask. The wool trade connected these meseta towns to Burgos and the international markets beyond.

The Road

The path between El Burgo Ranero and Reliegos follows a manicured track lined with trees. Unfortunately, the trees are on the wrong side of the path for afternoon shade, so on sunny summer days you're fully exposed. Carry plenty of water.

La Tiendina del Sol, right at the entrance to El Burgo Ranero, is a little gem of a shop run by Marisa – truly one of the kindest souls you’ll meet on the Camino. Do yourself a favour and stop in – her sandwiches are fresh and delicious, and she’s got cold drinks, groceries, fresh breads, even a small selection of lovely jewellery. The whole place is set up with pilgrims in mind, including small-size toiletries and other thoughtful extras, all at very fair prices. Honestly, it’s one of the warmest, most welcoming pit stops on the Camino - don’t miss it.

Whoever said that the trees are on the wrong (north) side of the path between El Burgo and Riliegos Is dead wrong -- unless several thousand trees have been transplanted since the comment was made. As of yesterday, October 10, 2024, the trees continue along the left (south) side of the path, continuing to shelter pilgrims from the sun

Perhaps the person who made the comment was from Australia and got north and south mixed up.

Stop here — you won’t regret it. The owners are lovely and work hard to make everything special. It is a tiny space but they pack a lot in there!

The cutest shop and family, so helpful. They had gluten free bread, spaghetti and made me a fresh gluten free breakfast sandwich, the best experience so far on the Camino for me !!!

Supermercado market La Tiendina de Sol is such a great shop for food and groceries. Good selection and served with such a smile and genuine friendly owners . They have travel size shampoo , conditioner etc , which seem not so easy to buy , in big supermarkets or pharmacies.

We stopped in this little supermarket and so glad we did! The owners are fantastic and really enjoy serving the pilgrims. So friendly and fun. They made us a couple sandwiches for lunch tomorrow and wrapped them up. Stop by and quench your thirst or fill your belly. This place makes you believe in kindness again!

We saw them today, well, maybe not babies - more like fluffy teenager storks. Lovely!
