If you choose to spend the night in Sahagún do your best to explore the town, it is not the prettiest of places but there are a few gems hiding about that give you a glimpse of its illustrious past.  At one time it rivaled Burgos and León in importance and grandeur.

For reasons unknown the town hall has drawn the camino path through town in a way that skips nearly every building worth

seeing, and which bypasses the plaza mayor entirely.  If you want to explore you will have to leave the marked path; see green alternative on map.

Notice

A very nice certificate is available from the Santuario de la Virgen Peregrina on your way out of Sahagún, a type of half-way Compostela. See the map for the location as it is not on the camino proper.

Fiesta

Market day is Saturday. Winter pilgrims can celebrate San Tirso on the 28th of January. San Juan de Sahagún on the 12th and 13th of June. Fiesta de Peregrina on the 2nd of July, and San Lorenzo on the 9th and 10th of August.

History

Sahagún owes its name to the 4th century martyr San Facundo, who along with San Primitivo were buried nearby. Because of this it has seen more than its share of battles between Christians and Muslims. Although the Christians ultimately won out, it was not before the town changed hands no fewer than five times. Each turnover saw the destruction of churches and their reconstruction. Today only 4 of the original 9 churches survive.

Follow arrows on road, do not go into the playground
It will pit you back on track

I had to make a last-minute booking in Sahagún due to a foot problem. The 3rd week in May 2024 on the Camino has been chilly, good for pilgrims but not good when the hotel won’t turn heat on until 6 pm. Today at 2 pm it was 13c/55f outside and colder inside the hotel. They advertise air conditioning, but if you have guests in the hotel, shouldn’t heat be an option in the rooms too?

I highly recommend staying at the Hostal- Albergue Sahagun. It’s a great place and the hosts are so welcoming and kind. I stayed there for a few extra days and it was really fun. Great food and atmosphere.

As noted in Wise Pilgrim’s notes on Sahagún, an attractive halfway certificate is available at the Santuario de la Virgen Peregrina. The cost (May 2023) is 4€ including a cardboard tube.
The certificate is NOT available at the Oficina de Turismo and the staff there seem a little tired of being asked for one.

You get the half way certificate at the albergue municipal
It’s 3 euros each

Camino de Sant…

Stop at the Oficina de Turismo de Sahagún (also the muni albergue) to get the halfway certificate! €3 plus €1 if you want a cardboard tube to put it in.

We stayed here last year in a twin room with bathroom and made a bee line for them this year. You will never experience a more pilgrim orientated stay on the Camino. Our private room cost 10 euros each, the bunks are 6. Breakfast is help yourself and leave a donation and mass for those who wish to go. Super clean quiet and comfortable with a really tranquil atmosphere. Perfect to recharge you batteries. The eving meal is included in the price, basic but good, please note, not on a Sunday.

Camino de Sant…

The compostela is not available at the church. I went there today and had to walk back into town to the biblioteca, library, in Plaza de Santiago to get it. It looks well and is printed in colour so I went across the road from the library to the post office, correos, and posted it home as I didn't want to damage it.
