The 4 bed cubicles was good. Bathrooms great. Lockers and charging points well positioned. Be aware they lock you out right on 10. My partner had to race out at 9.53pm, as he left his phone at the bar and he was told back luck if he gets back and it’s locked. Wasn’t very Christian to say that. The pilgrim dinner was the best.

Huge and perfectly organised albergue.

Check in was painless despite my lack of Spanish.
The pilgrims menu was quite good.
The hospilataros are always wandering the site, ensuring you have what you need. Keeping the place running smoothly must be hard with so many beds.
Never waited for a shower or a bathroom

Our walk up over the pass was memorable - snow, blizzards, wind and it was freezing. It was also magical. Quite a long day so glad to reach Ronscevalles- we took the longer road instead of the forest, best option for us. The hostel is huge, check-in takes a while but everyone is lovely. We choose to have dinner at the pub not the hostel. Def best to book well in advance. Showers are clean and plenty.

After a long day in the mountains this albergue is exactly what a tired pilgrim needs. Nice bed, pilgrims meal, and good showers. The pilgrims mass is definitely the best part though. Don’t miss if you can. It’s at 19:00!

I came over the Napoleon route on 18th April, and despite being well prepared, the weather went sideways on the descent. If you crossed on the 18th you'll know what I mean. No exageration to say I barely made it down to the monastery. Even though hardly able to walk and vizibly exhausted and frozen I was turned away as they were apparently full? Full? I even asked if I could sleep on the tiles in the hall or even in the garden under their tree. But no. I was told later, true or not, that some number of coaches of pilgrims were starting their camino there. I along with quite a few others took a taxi to the next village which was also full. As was next apparently. Only the kindness of 2 Irishman prevented me from having to sleep out in the open that night.
I have a memory of Roncesvalles and its far from a good one sadly.

I made the mistake of not booking ahead so had to leave SJPDP early to arrive in time to get a bed. Check in wasn’t until 1pm so we had to wait a little while before we could compete for beds (but I think there was still space for unreserved pilgrims until around 2:30pm). Comfy beds, relatively warm dorms and hot showers. Recommend filling out the forms on the table in reception so you don’t have to sacrifice your spot in the queue at 1pm. Staff are extremely welcoming and friendly.

I really enjoyed staying here. The albergue is well run and has everything you may need - they know what they’re doing. Check in takes a while if there are lots of pilgrims lining up before the doors open, but I find this is the (understandable) case with many albergues along the way. I was on the third floor which was a fantastic sleeping quarters. Not sure what the logic is behind bed assignments as I reserved only the day before and others who had reserved long before me were on lower floors - not sure if reservations count for that much.

The dinner was a highlight for me, with good food and a mix of new pilgrims as you all eat in different spots in the area. The showers were a welcome relief after the freezing Pyrenees weather, though I do know that after a large rush of pilgrims the hot water ran out for a while. To be expected with so many users, but something to keep in mind when timing your shower!

The Dutch staff run this albergue very efficiently. The third floor is the nicest as far as the cubicles. Reserve ahead. If not, you are placed in the basement and it is not nearly as lovely. The supper meal was delicious.

After we were suprised by snow om the Napoleon route (April 9th 2024), we were glad we arrived safely in Roncesvalles. The volenteers were friendly and for the first time in two days I could speak Dutch😃.
Diner en breakfast are well organised and was tasty.
At 8 p.m. there was a pilgrim mass.
In the dormitory were 118 people, but I was so tired I slept quite well.

Buen camino.
