Hazas - Liendo

A small hamlet with the 17th-century Iglesia de La Magdalena. The camino leaves the main road at the church, turning right and climbing over the hillside before descending under the A-8 into the Liendo valley.

The Road

The camino leaves the main road at the church in La Magdalena, turning right and uphill to follow the trail over the hillside. When it descends it passes under the A-8 and enters the area known as Liendo.

We followed this map, ignoring the yellow arrows because it looked a bit shorter. I should’ve read the comments here first! It was steep, rocky, and remote. About 2 km straight uphill and the route was not clearly marked.

This map is outdated now - the markers in Rioseco will bring you the new route. I ended up following this map and it was a deserted and overgrown trail that was steep & slippery. There is no one around - if something had of happened I would have been in big trouble! Please update this on the map - I got lucky today but someone else may not!

There are not enough markers. I think we would have found the path if there had been another marker where the dirt road begins, but since it didn't align with map we were very confused and went back to the main road to ask for help.
Even the locals were confused and couldn't offer clear advice. They insisted on driving us since they were worried we would get lost.

As a couple others have mentioned, the blue dots take a different route than the arrows here. Do not be fooled! Follow the arrows instead! This is the first time I’ve chosen the yellow arrows over the map guidance and I’m really glad I did. Another reviewer mentioned the blue dot way being steep, narrow, and not having any views- the yellow arrows way didn’t feel terribly steep to me, is nice and wide, and has gorgeous views. A little muddy in spots, but nothing terrible. You wind past eucalyptus fields and cow pastures until you end up on a gravel road.

The arrows aren’t super thorough once you begin your ascent, but I found that by looking around a little more than normal, I found guidance at the tricky intersections. Any intersections with no markings- trust your instinct and stick to the most well traveled path (many logging/farming roads intersect, but stick to your gut and continue onward!) additionally, you can more or less orient yourself by heading northwest in general.

About when we get to the church we started seeing the Camino signs telling different directions which seem to loop back to Rioseco and the local people told us to follow the signs instead of following the blue dots which looks to be much shorter way. We decided to follow the blue dots since it didn’t make sense to walk back to Rioseco. The trail soon became a serious steep climb on a pretty difficult rocky and muddy terrain of an off-road path that crossed with multiple other trails which could be confusing as there’s no marks or yellow signs. Have to look carefully for the right direction. Trails eventually join the Camino de Liendo which is a much better dirt road. It was not a long distance but felt very long because of the steep climb and the difficulty of the trail. If you just started the day from Rioseco or La Magdalena and weather is good, this wouldn’t be much of a problem. But if it’s near the end of your day or if it’s raining hard, consider taking the alternate route. And definitely not great for after dark. There’s really not much of a nice view on this stretch as well so you won’t miss anything.

I first tried to follow the yellow signs but soon lost them out of sight . Went back and took the blue way from this app. Indeed a long workout and with rain very muddy and steep at some points. At the end an amazing view and Nice landscape.

I followed the ‘blue dots’ instead of the yellow arrows, and went up and over the mountain just fine. I don’t know if it was a shortcut, but it was definitely a workout!
