Between here and Pamplona, you will notice many villages perched above the valley floor. This was to maximize both farmland (shared and more fertile near the river) and security.

Fiesta

The last Sunday in August.

History

The founding of Espinal was driven by the desire to protect pilgrims. This river valley has a long history of battle and banditry, and it was in the interest of the Navarran Kings (in this case Teobaldo-II) to keep them safe.

Several more villages along the way share a similar founding, and Teobaldo was not alone in improving the infrastructure of the camino. Indeed, several other Kings, Queens, Saints, and modern politicians all share a common interest in promoting the camino.

Delicious food and friendly staff, playful & uplifting music with large places to sit outside and inside. A wonderful atmosphere and welcoming stop.

Camino de Sant… (not verified)

Great place to stop for breakfast. Good choice of food and the owner is very welcoming. He is also a fountain of knowledge.

Camino de Sant…

Walk through the town and you arrive to Txalaparta café tapas bar. Opens at 7 pm and you will receive very nice service and good food.

Camino de Sant…

This little bar off the Main Street, Calle San Bartolome, was open as we walked through before 10 am serving fantastic coffee, pastries, tortilla, fresh fruit, and several fried egg dishes that looked delicious! We had a couple cafes, fruit, and a pastry and then had him wrap up two jamon y queso bocadillos for lunch later. Clean toilets, classical music playing on the patio - a lovely morning stop! Very nice proprietor. He said it’s been a tough couple years with COVID hitting the pilgrim trade, so stop in and support him! (And WAY better coffee than our breakfast at Hotel Roncesvalles - next time I’d just wait and eat breakfast here!)

Camino de Sant…

As you enter town there is a bar that has a spigot and let’s pilgrims fill their bottles. Take advantage of this as it is the last water until Zuberrj.
