Camino de Sant…

Travelling in a makeshift pack stretched between Zafra and Villafranca de los Barros, a pilgrim suggested this place after leaving Zafra.

On arrival I was told it was closed due to a Fiesta. It turned out he just didn’t like the look of me. I saw two Spanish hikers and their Basset Hounds enjoying the facilities. I was told accommodation was just 4km away. It wasn’t, it was over 6.5 km and gave me 40+km for the day.

Imagine my thoughts after I advised my German friend by text to be prepared for a long walk into Villafranca and he replied that he had been admitted without fuss and was sharing a room with the couple and their two Basset Hounds.

I’m sure it’s a very nice place, but the owner does not deserve the patronage of pilgrims. Don’t take the 500m detour, stick to route and enjoy a night in Villafranca.

The albergue is new and wonderful with in room heater. There is a bar/cafe to stop for lunch or a cafe con leice. Also a restaurant that serves wonderful food. I think it’s the best place I have stayed so far. In the middle of nothing, there is magic. Buen Camino!

This place is absolutely beautiful. The Spanish government has redone an old building that used to house with all of processing facility into a beautiful place to stay. It has a pool and lots of cool spots to sit in the shade. All the mattresses are new and the bathrooms spotless. It’s definitely worth hiking through Zafra to stay here if you can. It has a much more rural setting and the hostess works very hard to make sure your stay is pleasant.
