A pleasant but small town with a quirky mix of albergues. Bar Alquimista is a friendly stop if you are passing through, and they do a decent dinner too.

Wegbeschreibung

Just outside of town, on your left-hand side and likely obscured by tall grass, sits one of San Juan de Ortega’s smaller engineering feats. It only takes one span to cross the diminutive río Vena.

This place was recommended to us and thank God! I am 58 years old and have lapped this planet over a hundred times. I can say, unequivocally, that this is, and will probably always be, the best Burger I have ever tasted. It is the food equivalent of an Angel crying on your tongue.

The food was a true culinary delight. Everything is fresh and the flavors are incredible. The Angel crying on your tongue is not an exaggeration. The couple that run it are amazing and the place is the perfect ambiance. I will propose to my next wife over a Rustica Burger and glass of wine from Rioja.

Seconding the other post about this gem of a restaurant. Delicious homemade food. Had a wonderful homemade dinner. Breakfast available at 7ish for pilgrims. Lovely people.

Second the recommendation for el alquimista. Had the chicken. It was excellent. The lady was very nice and funny, even with my spotty spanish

Highly recommend eating at bar alquimista. The food was all home made and delicious. Pilgrim menu €11. And the lady who does the cooking is such a character!
