San Francisco Javier was born here on April 6, 1506. His family's castle, dating primarily from the 16th c. , is wrapped around a 10th. c. tower. Cardinal Cisneros laid it all to waste in the campaign to render Navarra powerless following that kingdom's forcible union to Spain in 1512. The castle complex was heavily restored as a Jesuit shrine and retirement home in the 20th. c. Although San Francisco Javier's body is in Goa, India, the annual Javierada, on the first Sunday in March, brings tens of thousands of pilgrims to visit.
