Navarra

Navarra is the first of the Autonomous Communities along the Camino Francés.  It extends from here, in the heights of the Pyrenees to the river plains of the Ebro on the outskirts of Logroño.   The language in these parts is officially Spanish and Basque, and it should be noted that although Navarra is divided between Basques and Spaniards, the majority of the population here refers to this part of the world as Basqueland (pais vasco) rather than Spain. The signage here reflects that sentiment, and most towns have an alternative name whose spelling is strictly monitored and edited by spray can happy nationalists.  You will as well see that the street names have dropped the castillian 'Calle' for the basque equivalent 'Kalea.'
